I was ecstatic when the owners of Chickie Dough reached out to me on Instagram. As many of you already know, I love farmers’ markets and supporting local businesses. For those of you who haven’t heard about Chickie Dough, they offer a healthier alternative of dips on the market by creating it using chickpeas. I’ve heard about their product for months now, but never found the need to purchase it myself. I couldn’t justify spending $6 for one container (or $15 for three) on something I didn’t know if I’d like in the long run. I also gave up keeping up a diet as you can tell by my Instagram and bad cravings (seriously, I was eating BP’s perogy pizza and cactus chips as I’m writing this); however, I still love all things fitness-related and eating healthy food.
Chickie Dough is available for purchase every Saturday in the Strathcona Farmers’ Market from 8 a.m to 3 p.m.
The chickpea based dips created by Chickie Dough have distinct textures and flavours similar to cookie dough, but with the impressive nutritional values of hummus. They’re high in fiber and protein while being low in sugar. They’re also vegan, gluten free, and dairy free! Fitting for all dietary restrictions.
Chickie Dough offers three flavours each week with the two main flavours being chocolate chip and peanut butter. They also have a new special feature each month, and last month’s special was turtle. I picked up both chocolate chip and turtle. I was also told that they’re preservative free, so they last about a week in the fridge or you can freeze it if you’re not planning to eat it right away.
The “dough” is creamy yet a little grainy, resembling the texture of cookie dough. Similar to hummus — you can eat it with fruits, bread, or veggies. I normally eat it on its own with a spoon!
Side note: don’t try baking it in the oven in hopes that it’d become a cookie. It just gets warm since it’s missing baking soda and eggs!
